A collection of work done in the traditional style of Miniature by three artists from Rajasthan, India.

Naina Kumari, Navneeth Pareek and Ghanshyam Nimbuk are Master Miniaturists who have learnt their skill from their forefathers using natural pigments and traditional techniques.

The exhibition ranges from rhythm- the swaying of the unpright camel and his cart, thundering stallion hooves, chiming of temple bells and drumbeats, swaying skirts and flowing veils in dance.

The rich colour of the desert land breathtaking sunsets on golden sand dunes, turbans and dazzling veils with flashes of silver and gold tinsel. All this and more is captured with intricate detail.

The exhibition is curated by Anita Kapur who has been mentor to these artists since 1984. In an effort to promote an art heritage of India, Anita has exhibited their work internationally with great success.

Anita Chowdry: Talk on the Art of the Miniature.

Rhythm and Colour in Miniature in practice
A talk and demonstration by Anita Chowdry in conjunction with the exhibition:

Anita Chowdry presents a lecture and demonstration sharing her intimate knowledge of the studio practice of artisans in India and her own depth of experience as a researcher and contemporary painter in this genre. She will demonstrate how hand prepared colours derived from rare minerals and precious metals create the distinctive palette of miniature painting, and how a rigorous discipline in brush drawing technique underpins the refinement of the genre.

Anita Chowdry is a painter, researcher and educator. She studied traditional miniature painting techniques under a hereditary master in India in the early 1990s. Since then her research has been centred on the techniques and material preparation used by painters in 16th and 17th century Mughal ateliers, in which she has run dedicated workshops for conservators and craftspeople at major institutions in Britain and abroad.

Images from her recent exhibition at the Brunei Gallery, SOAS, 14 April 20 June 2009, which focused on her skill in illumination techniques, can be seen on www.saatchi-gallery.co.uk and www.bridgesmathart.org
