BHINNA ABHINNA (SEPARATE YET ONE)
Gemini
After the roaring success of the last Bhinna Abhinna (Separate yet one) held at the Bhavan with famous guitarist Antonio Forcione, prepare yourself for another in this fascinating series of collaborative music, this time featuring the group Gemini and the Bhavan's own Indian classical musicians.

Gemini is an ensemble consisting of the clarinet, mezzo-soprano and percussion. The group led by Ian Mitchell has been conducting workshops with students studying the Indian music degree along with members of the teaching staff at the Bhavan.

Gemini and The Bhavan Centre are therefore proud to present an afternoon featuring a varied programme of music including a newly and especially-created piece just for the occasion. The afternoon will also include a percussion duet between the two genres along with some electrifying group improvisations mixing both traditions in an inimitable style not to be missed.

The B.Mus Honours degree in Indian Classical Music is taught in collaboration with Trinity College of Music and is validated by City University.

Talk and Demonstration of Traditional Pigments by Anita Chowdry (Painter, Researcher & Educator)

About the exhibition:
From the captivating call of Mansarovar and Mount Kailasa, the Ganges is the life-giving link between the Himalayas and the burning plains.

Exhibiting their recent collection of work, three miniaturists- Navneet Pareek, Naina Kumari and Ghanshyam Nibuk have shown life on the banks of the magical Ganges from its source in the Himalayan snow-clad peaks to its merger with the Bay of Bengal.

The works depict a variety of subjects- perennial snow, cascading waterfalls, temples on the Ghats of Varanasi, floating oil-lamps and the rolling river in monsoon fury, colourful sailboats in Bangladesh and wild life in the Sunderbans. The mystery and power of the Ganga, and why it remains a river of legend and a perennial source of song and story.

Using the traditional natural dyes and fine hand-made squirrel-hair brushes, the artists excel themselves in their ability to depict exquisite detail in the jewel-like works of art.

A TRIUMPH OF LIGHT
Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia
The vibrant Festival of Diwali comes to life in this extraordinary storytelling and music concert.

Featuring Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, Yogesh Samsi, Vayu Naidu, Jyotsna Srikanth & Colin Seddon

Storyteller Vayu Naidus Ramayana illumines the significance of Diwali, with the epic tale of love, loss and liberation about Rama and Sitas valiant struggle to triumph over darkness. Percussionist Colin Seddon and south Indian violinist Jyotsna Srikanth provide a hypnotic soundscape.

The concert culminates in serene traditional, yet innovative, Hindustani classical melodies from internationally acclaimed flute maestro Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia who has transformed the bansuri (bamboo flute) into an instrument of beauty. India's great tabla maestro Yogesh Samsi accompanies him.

Chaurasia is among the small handful of Indian classical musicians who can sell out concerts in his homeland and around the world. "The Guardian"

VEDIC RECITATIONS AND HAVELI SANGEET
various
Haveli Sangeet is a tradition of music often considered a precursor to dhrupad. Associated with the Vaishnav movement, it is traditionally sung in temples dedicated to the deity Krishna, including the Srinathji temple at Nathdwara in Rajasthan and the temple dedicated to Sri Govardhan Nath ji in Indore.

The Vedas are an ancient body of texts written in Sanskrit which were considered to contain 'sacred knowledge' handed down over the centuries. They form the fundamental basis for what is now Hinduism, and had a vast influence on philosophies including Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism.

Among the most ancient religious texts still in existence, they give a unique view of everyday life in India more than four thousand years ago. Their subject matter is vast and their language as elegant and uplifting as the thoughts contained in them.

Sanskrit scholars from India will recite passages from the Vedas and explain their meaning and validity in the twenty-first century and beyond.

HIMALAYA FESTIVAL
Various
The Newars, traditional inhabitants of Kathmandu and the surrounding towns and countryside, have a rich and ancient tradition of dance. The dance performance this evening includes Bhairab Nach; an ancient masked performance by the Newar community in the Pokhara Valley of Nepal and named after Bhairab (or Bhairava, an aspect of Shiva) to ward off evil spirits.

As part of Bhairab Nach, Khyak Nach will also be performed. This dance form is about two ghosts who dance in joy and full of love and life, to demonstrate different sexual and aerobic positions of Kama Sutra in an entertaining way to adults, and especially newly married couples.

Sushil Prajapati of Bhairab Nach Guthi UK originally brought this masked dance to London supported by his father Bishnu Pd. Prajapati in 2009. Since then, the troop have performed at a number of locations across the capital including Nepal Greenwich Forum, Hindu Temple Charity Programme and at various Pasa Puchah Guthi Programmes in Aldershot, Woolwich and Plumstead. More recently, Bhairab Nach Guthi UK have performed at Visit Nepal 2011 Promotion Programme as well as Comolongmo Fair: Experience the Magic of Nepal at Spitalfields.

NIRMANIKA: The beauty of Architecture
Various
Architecture and dance have more in common than many of us think; both manipulate space, both create sculpted forms. Architecture and dance come together in a dynamic way with Nirmanika, a new dance production whose name means architectonics in Sanskrit.

Specifically, Nirmanika explores various aspects of Indian temple architecture through the medium of Bharathanatyam dance. Through Bharatanatyam's unique movements and expression, Nirmanika touches on concepts of geometry, space, structure, form, philosophy, history and more in five unique and beautifully choreographed dance pieces.
This exciting international collaboration features dancers from Britain and Apsaras Arts Dance
Company from Singapore.

PURUSH SHRINGAR and NAYAK BHEDA
Pratap Pawar
A solo presentation by Padmashri Pratap Pawar accompanied by Pt Kalinath Mishra (tabla) from Mumbai, Pandit Vishwa Prakash (vocal and composer), Debipriya Sircar (sitar and vocal) and Jonathan Lawerence(flute).

Purush Shringar is a unique presentation challenging the assumption that Shringar or decor relates only to a woman. If in nature one finds beauty in the feathers of a peacock, the colours of a sparrow and the body of a lion, then why do we avoid expressing the beauty of a man in society This piece will explore this concept through mythological characters.

Nayak Bheda will explore the concept of heroes described in Natya Shastra, documented over two thousand years ago.

There will also be selected pieces of Kathak performed by Triveni's emerging dancers.
