Exhibiting their recent collection of work, three miniaturists- Navneet Pareek, Naina Kumari and Ghanshyam Nibuk have shown life on the banks of the magical Ganges from its source in the Himalayan snow-clad peaks to its merger with the Bay of Bengal. The works depict a variety of subjects- perennial snow, cascading waterfalls, temples on the Ghats of Varanasi, floating oil-lamps and the rolling river in monsoon fury, colourful sailboats in Bangladesh and wild life in the Sunderbans. The mystery and power of the Ganga, and why it remains a river of legend and a perennial source of song and story. Using the traditional natural dyes and fine hand-made squirrel-hair brushes, the artists excel themselves in their ability to depict exquisite detail in the jewel-like works of art. Read More... |

7:00pm VEDIC RECITATIONS AND HAVELI SANGEET various Haveli Sangeet is a tradition of music often considered a precursor to dhrupad. Associated with the Vaishnav movement, it is traditionally sung in temples dedicated to the deity Krishna, including the Srinathji temple at Nathdwara in Rajasthan and the temple dedicated to Sri Govardhan Nath ji in Indore. The Vedas are an ancient body of texts written in Sanskrit which were considered to contain 'sacred knowledge' handed down over the centuries. They form the fundamental basis for what is now Hinduism, and had a vast influence on philosophies including Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism. Among the most ancient religious texts still in existence, they give a unique view of everyday life in India more than four thousand years ago. Their subject matter is vast and their language as elegant and uplifting as the thoughts contained in them. Sanskrit scholars from India will recite passages from the Vedas and explain their meaning and validity in the twenty-first century and beyond. Read More... |

7.00pm HIMALAYA FESTIVAL Various The Newars, traditional inhabitants of Kathmandu and the surrounding towns and countryside, have a rich and ancient tradition of dance. The dance performance this evening includes Bhairab Nach; an ancient masked performance by the Newar community in the Pokhara Valley of Nepal and named after Bhairab (or Bhairava, an aspect of Shiva) to ward off evil spirits. As part of Bhairab Nach, Khyak Nach will also be performed. This dance form is about two ghosts who dance in joy and full of love and life, to demonstrate different sexual and aerobic positions of Kama Sutra in an entertaining way to adults, and especially newly married couples.
