Dramas
India is one of the few countries which can boast of an indigenous drama, unaffected by any foreign influence. When Indian plays first became known to the European world through Sir William Jones' translation of Sakuntala in 1789, it was then generally thought that Greek literature had penetrated into India, influencing their playwrights; but that opinion does not prevail today. Most critics agree that Indian drama was neither a borrowing nor an imitation, but the product of native genius. Indian drama and theatre is perhaps as old as its music and dance. Classical theatre traditions have also influenced modern theatre, particularly the Gujarati, Hindi, Marathi and Bengali theatres.
Drama
The drama department at Bhavan has performed the role of sponsoring, research, dissemination, appreciation and patronage of Gujarati drama. This department always led by acclaimed Mumbai (Bombay) based directors and enjoys great popularity among the Gujarati community in UK. Over the last 25 years we have produced over 35 different plays, the majority of which have toured extensively throughout the UK and Europe. In addition to Gujarati theatre we regularly present plays in a variety of other Indian languages. Our drama director is Tushar Trivedi who also runs weekly classes in Dramatic Art.

Dance Drama
The aim of the Special Projects is to help cultivate local talents through teaching drama and provides a unique opportunity to take part in a performing art event at a professional level. These popular dramas are written on the basis of the epics and puranas and directed by directors who were specially flown in for the project. The project normally takes place during the summer vacation, so that the fun of performance does no disturb the children’s school work. Over the last 18 years we have presented 8 dance ballets in Hindi, our national language, with English commentary. Like our plays, these productions have toured extensively and to wide acclaim. |
