Songs of Praise

A series of five lectures introducing the devotional music of India’s Hindus, Muslims and Sikhs. Not only do all three religious traditions share the same Hindustani (North Indian) classical music and sing the same ragas, but have also freely borrowed one another’s devotional texts, anecdotal references and poetic imagery. The Sikhs sing the verses of Sufi poets. Numerous Hindu bhajans of the medieval period directly invoke Sufi masters, while the classical repertoire of Muslim qawwals often contains direct references to Lord Krishna and his consort Radha.

The lectures will go deeper into the broad topics of: Origins, Bhakti, Sufism in India, Qawwali and Shabad.

Timings: Tuesdays 6.30 - 8.30pm

Dates: June 3 - July 1, 2014
