Kala Festival 2026 returns to The Bhavan for its third concert here, with an evening built on two kinds of pulse: the raga and the foot.
Pandit Debasis Chakroborty opens on the Indian slide guitar, an instrument that came into Hindustani classical music from outside its tradition and now holds a place of its own. He is joined by Ustad Akram Khan on tabla, and the two build a set that moves from the slow unfolding of a raga into faster rhythmic exchange, each answering the other.
After the interval, Alokparna Guha takes the stage with Kathak. The same rhythmic cycles that the tabla laid out in the first half now sound through her feet, in the ankle bells, the spins and the sharp closes on the beat.
The two halves speak to each other. What the audience hears in the first, they see in the second. For anyone who has never sat with Indian classical music before, this is a direct way in. For anyone who knows it well, the pairing of slide guitar with Kathak is a rare bill to catch in London.
