Join Ustad Akram Khan, son of the legendary tabla maestro Ustad Hashmat Ali Khan. He is one of the finest tabla players in the world and the torchbearer of the Ajrada Gharana – one of the six main gharanas (schools) of tabla in India. He has preserved the legacy and traditional values of this gharana through his deep dedication to the art. Ustad Akram Khan has successfully retained and revived more than fifteen kaydas (compositions) conceptualized by the Ajrada Gharana.
This exclusive workshop shines a light on the rich tradition and intricacy of tabla, especially the Ajrada style, known for its precision and sophisticated techniques. Participants will develop hand techniques to produce both high-pitched and bass tones with clarity and control. Key concepts such as layakari (rhythmic play) and the role of rhythm in Indian classical music will be explored.
