Migration is not a new phenomenon. People had migrated for thousands of years for various reasons. Migration accentuated rapidly over the past hundred years, mainly with aircraft transportation. Historically people migrated from their country of origin due to are two main factors – ‘Push’ factors and ‘pull factors’. Push factors are mainly famine, flood, unemployment, persecution etc. Pull factors are, availability of jobs, better life, educational opportunities etc. in the alien country.
When people migrate from their familiar culture and language into an entirely alien culture, this causes initially ‘cultural shock’ and many sociocultural and mental health problems. This lecture intends to give an overview about these salient issues, and how best we can cope with these issues, and successfully integrate into the host society.
