Hatha Yoga

The word “hatha” can be translated two ways: as “willful” or “forceful,” or the yoga of physical activity, and as “sun” (ha) and “moon” (tha), the yoga of balance. Hatha practices are designed to align and calm your body, mind, and spirit in preparation for meditation. The Hathapradīpikạ, also called Hatha Yoga Pradipika, is an important and one of the most influential texts of the Hatha yoga. Its mythical founder, Matseyndranath, is regarded as a saint in both the Hindu and Buddhist schools of yoga.

Referring to the specific system of physical strength and techniques, it may perhaps be the reason this form of yoga – and particularly its physical postures – became immensely popular around the world during the 20thCentury, as a form of purely physical exercise.

Note: Students should bring their own yoga mat; all other equipment is provided.
