Dr. Swapnokalpa Dasgupta is an acclaimed Odissi dancer, teacher, and choreographer from Mumbai. A student of Padmavibhushan Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra and his disciples, she has led the Dance Department at the NCPA for 13 years. She is the recipient of prestigious awards, including the Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar and the Kanak Nartan Puraskar. Holding a doctorate in Dance and a Master’s in Arts Management, she founded the Odissi department at The Bhavan, London, and frequently conducts workshops worldwide.

Sushmita started training in Kathak at the age of eight, and after an honours graduation in Physics, decided to take to dance as a full time study in Kathak Kendra, New Delhi, and later, as her profession. She has trained with Shri Tirath Ram Azad, Smt. Reba Vidyarthi and Shri Munna Shukla. She also had the opportunity to watch Smt. Rohini Bhate in Pune at work, and has been deeply influenced by her thoughts and values about dance, education and personal growth. Sushmita Ghosh leads Aakriti Foundation based in Gurgaon. Dance for her, is a pathway to awareness, aesthetics and evolution. She was Bhavan’s Kathak teacher during the late 90’s.

JNANA AITHAL

JNANA AITHAL – Bharatanatyam Recital |

Jnana Aithal is a Bharatanatyam dancer from Mangaluru who began training at the age of five under Vidushi Vidyashree Radhakrishnan and continues her artistic journey under Guru Balakrishna Manjeshwar. She holds a Master’s degree in Bharatanatyam from Reva University and completed her Vidwath Antim Grade Examination with distinction. Founder of the dance troupe ‘Hejjenaada’, which has performed on over 2000 stages across India. Though she graduated as a software engineer, her love of arts plays a more important role in her life.

Mitali (Banerjee) Bhawmik is a Hindustani classical vocalist originally from Assam, India. She trained under distinguished gurus including Pandit Biren Phukan, Vidushi Meera Banerjee, and the renowned violin maestro Padmabhushan Pandit V. G. Jog. Her music reflects a rich blend of different gharana traditions, shaped by Pandit Jog’s unique musical philosophy. She is the Director of Ethnomedia Music Studio in New Jersey and the founder of the non-profit organisation Raag-Rang, dedicated to promoting Hindustani classical music.

A fifth-generation musician of the illustrious Lalgudi bani, Lalgudi Vijayalakshmi, daughter and disciple of legendary musician, Lalgudi G Jayaraman, is an artiste who engages both deeply and variedly with her music. As a violinist, she performs solo, duet, as an accompanist and collaborates with artistes across genres. She is also an accomplished vocalist, a composer, and a teacher. She has performed musical compositions such as thillanas, varnams and krithis. She has received the prestigious Sangita Kalanidhi award by The Music Academy.

MADHUSUDHAN BARMAN – TABLA SOLO  | SUMMER SCHOOL TEACHERS’ CONCERT SERIES 2026

Sri Madhusudan Barman is a distinguished Tabla artist known for his innovative contributions. Trained initially by his father, Late Barendra Mohan Barman, and later under the legendary Pandit Sankar Ghosh, he developed exceptional mastery on the Tabla. He gained the title Sangeet Visharad from Pracheen Kala Kendra, Chandigarh, in recognition for pioneering a unique Jugalbandi format pairing Tabla with the Sreekhole. Through his performances and artistic vision, he continues to bridge classical tradition with creative innovation.

Lalgudi GJR Krishnan is one of the world’s foremost violinists and a leading exponent of the renowned Lalgudi Bani. Son and disciple of the legendary maestro Lalgudi Jayaraman, he has carried forward this rich musical legacy while developing his own distinctive style. Known for his mastery of technique, bhava, and laya, his playing reflects the Lalgudi tradition of making the violin closely emulate the human voice. With a performing career spanning over five decades, he has appeared worldwide and is especially celebrated for his acclaimed violin duets with his sister, Lalgudi Vijayalakshmi.

Mridangam is a South Indian Percussion instrument, a vital part of both music concerts and dance recitals. Our resident Mridangam Guru is offering 3 unique courses useful to both instrumentalists and dancers.
 
MRIDANGAM COURSE – This course is open to beginners and advanced students, and is a brilliant opportunity to learn the nuances of playing the instrument in an intensive environment. Learn the basics of tala structure, rhythm accent, rhythm syllables, variations, creativity in composing, and the aspects of Laya (tempo – 3 speeds). For advanced students, you will also get an insight into the formula to composing endlessly in the Pancha jathi talas – the 5 principal rhythms patterns.

USTAD MEHBOOB NADEEM 

Born into a highly illustrious family of traditional musicians of the Agra Gharana, Mehboob is the grandson of the legendary Ustad Vilayat Hussain Khan (Pranpiya) and Gayan Samrat Ustad Azmat Hussain Khan (Dilrang).

Endowed with a rich melodious and sonorous voice, Mehboob was initiated in the art of music at a very young age by his father Ustad Yakub Hussain. He then began his sitar training under the guidance of his uncle Shri Rafat Khan. He is now under the guidance of world renowned sitar maestro Pandit Arvind Parikh.
 
A gifted artist, Mehboob possesses a keen, aesthetic sense and a matured ability in the development and rendering of a raga. Under the devoted teaching of his Guru and mentor Pandit Arvind Parikh he has excelled in perfecting the techniques and style of the legendary sitar maestro Ustad Vilayat Khan. He is a widely-respected sitar player who is acknowledged as one of the most accomplished of the present generation of the Vilayatkhani Gharana and is known to be one of the best sitar players in the UK.
 
His performances are truly unique & inspiring and have enthralled audiences in India and abroad. He is regularly called to perform throughout India, Africa, Europe and the UK.

Smt. SAJALI ROY

Smt. Sajali Roy has been teaching at The Bhavan since 2005. Her gurus include the late Dr. Jamini Nath Ganguly, late Dr. Biman Mukhopadhay, Pt. Ajoy Chakraborty and Jharna Banerjee. She has directed and performed shows across India, Bangladesh, and in the UK. A qualified Sangeet Prabhakar (teacher), she teaches Bengali song-forms such as Rabindrasangeet, Nazrul Geeti, Dwijendra Geeti, Atul Prasadi, Rajnikanth and Raag Pradhan.

Smt. INDU BAROT

Smt. Indu Barot has a master’s in Sanskrit and in Computer Science. She writes poetry, articles and stories, and is also a translator of Hindi, Sanskrit ad English works. She is the resident teacher for Hindi language at The Bhavan.
